Wheat...The mid-week surge across the wheat futures complex supported
a higher move in west coast wheat markets on Thursday, primarily favoring
the protein wheats. For it's part, white wheat saw basis defensive versus
the rally in Chicago, dropping nearly 20 cents from a week ago and muting
gains for cash bids. Pacific Northwest weather retreated to a more winter
like condition this week, but brought additional precipitation and near-
term forecasts show a return to more seasonal temps into next week.
Weekly Sales...USDA reported a total of only 8.5 million bushels in
export demand in both old and new crop positions for U.S. wheat over the
past week. This puts old crop commitments at 896 million bushels, which
is 14% ahead of a year ago and 18% above the five-year average pace. Top
seller was white wheat with 1.7 million bushels, putting commitments at
200 million bushels, which is 5% below a year ago but 13% above average.
New crop sales of 4.8 million bushels, mostly hard red spring, puts new
crop commitments 5 million bushels below a year ago at 48 million.
